Stewarding and penalties

Decisions that are fair, visible and recorded: from an incident report to the banner on the broadcast.

The kinds of decision

The Penalties card in Race control issues every decision a steward needs in an FR Legends league:

  • Time penalty: seconds added to the driver's race time, usually five or ten.
  • Warning: on the record, no time added.
  • Drive through: the driver has to come through the pit lane. FRLcast can turn an unserved drive through into a black flag after a number of laps you choose.
  • Black flag and disqualification: the driver is out of the session.

Every decision needs a reason, because the reason goes out on the broadcast and to the driver word for word. Keep it short and factual: Track limits at turn 3, Causing a collision, Unsafe rejoin.

Investigate first, decide second

Not every incident is clear at first sight. A decision can start as an investigation: it shows as under investigation on the timing tower and on the driver's phone, but adds no time. When the stewards have watched the replay, they either apply it or mark it no further action. An open investigation never moves anyone on the timing screen, which is the whole point of announcing one.

FRLcast can also raise findings by itself for the two things it can measure: jump starts and track limits. You choose how many track-limit warnings are allowed and how many seconds follow. By default these findings open an investigation rather than penalise automatically, because software that hands down penalties from a mistracked dot would be wrong in public. Contact and blocking are judgement calls and are never raised automatically.

Decisions on the broadcast

Each decision appears on the stream in the Race control banner: the car number, the driver, the decision and the reason, coloured by the kind of call, for about nine seconds. It shows for new penalties, investigations, decisions and served penalties. If a decision deserves to be seen again, the On air button beside it in the console puts it back on screen. The live text also feeds the ticker and the spoken commentary.

Decisions on the driver's phone

The driver app shows the penalty over the game the moment it is issued, with a notification that keeps the full reason, and the voice spotter reads it out. A driver with an unserved drive through sees how many laps they have left to serve it on their pit board. Penalties belong to the session they were given in, so a decision in practice does not follow anyone into the race.

Incident reports and appeals

Drivers can report an incident from the app. A report is not a decision: it appears in the Incident reports card for the stewards, who can open an investigation on the reported car with one click. The driver's own words stay in the console and never go on air. A driver can also appeal a penalty from the app; the stewards uphold or overturn it, and their note is the ruling the driver sees.

Licence points

Some leagues want more than a single race penalty for a driver who collects one every week. With licence points switched on (Championship page), every decided penalty also costs points on the driver's licence: by default a time penalty is 1 point, a drive through 2, a black flag 3 and a disqualification 4, and a steward can set a different figure on one penalty. Points are charged when the round is scored. Reaching the limit, 12 by default, earns a race ban for the next round and the licence starts again from zero. Drivers see their count in the app, so nobody is surprised by a ban.

A simple routine for race night

  1. Agree the reasons you use before the season, so decisions read the same every week.
  2. Open an investigation as soon as an incident happens, so viewers and drivers know it is being looked at.
  3. Decide before the chequered flag when you can, so the result on the stream is the final one.
  4. Finish the session: the decisions are saved with it and appear in the race report.

  • Peringatan: tercatat, tanpa tambahan waktu.
  • Drive through: pembalap harus melewati pit lane.

Investigasi dulu, putuskan kemudian
