Drift judging explained

Judging is what makes a drift event fair. A panel that scores the same way every run earns the drivers' trust, even when they disagree with a result.

The three criteria

Most competitive drift series score a solo run on three things. The names vary, but the ideas are the same.

  • Line: how closely the car follows the course the judges set. A judge marks clipping points (where the front or rear of the car should come close) and zones (areas the car should pass through). Hitting them precisely scores well; running wide, cutting inside or missing a zone loses points.
  • Angle: how sideways the car is, and how consistently. Big angle held smoothly through the section scores more than angle that comes and goes. Too much angle that costs control or speed is not rewarded.
  • Style: commitment and flow. A fast, aggressive entry, smooth transitions, speed carried through the course and no hesitation or corrections. Style is the most subjective criterion, so agree as a panel what you are looking for before the event.

A common split, used by Formula Drift, gives line 35 points, angle 30 and style 35, for a total out of 100. Whatever split you use, publish it before qualifying.

Deductions

Agree on clear deductions so every judge applies them the same way: a spin or straightening the car ends the run's scoring, putting wheels off track loses heavily, and hitting a wall or barrier is treated as a major error. Decide whether minor corrections (a small lift or counter-steer adjustment) cost a little or nothing.

Judging tandem battles

In a battle, two cars run twice, each leading once. The judges compare them rather than scoring them separately.

  • The lead car should drive the qualifying line as if alone. A leader who drives a slower or narrower line to escape is marked down.
  • The chase car should stay as close as possible while matching or mirroring the lead car's angle, and should not lose the line to stay close. Closing the distance through a section scores well; contact caused by the chaser is a serious error.

After both runs, each judge picks a winner. If the runs were too close to separate, a judge calls One More Time, and the pair runs again. Set a limit on reruns so the event cannot loop forever.

Scoring consistently as a panel

Before the event, the judges should watch two or three practice runs together and score them out loud, comparing numbers until they roughly agree on what a 25 or a 30 looks like for each criterion. During the event, each judge scores independently and does not discuss a run until it is recorded. Averaging several judges smooths out one judge being slightly harsher or kinder.

Explaining results

Drivers accept a close decision much more easily when they understand it. After qualifying, publish the scores per criterion, not just the total. After a battle, a short sentence from a judge (the chase lost the line at the second clipping point) goes a long way. Keep judges' notes for the session in case a driver asks later.

When judges are not in the same room

Online leagues often have judges at home. Give each judge a private way to submit scores, so nobody sees the others' votes before submitting their own, and reveal the votes only after all judges have called the battle. That keeps each judgement independent and makes the moment of the result more exciting for viewers.

Penjelasan penilaian drift

Setelah kedua run, tiap juri memilih pemenang.
